On the evening that autumn became winter, the triplets appeared for what we thought was the last time. But the opossum continued visiting throughout the winter months even though its coat looked too thin to get it through the cold. In places its skin showed through like a balding old man with a few strands of gray hair plastered carefully over his head.
The decision toopen the scouting program to girls last Octoberwas both a reflection of growing progressive attitudes as well as a business decision. The Boy Scouts of America has seen declining numbers for years. The organization says it has nearly 2.3 million youth members between 5 and 21, a decrease from the 2.8 million members in 2012..
It is my personal observation that purity manifests through physical appearance. I have come across many persons who were kind and peaceful, who never seemed to age as much physically. Two very eminent persons bear this testimony of my observation. The corkscrew willow, Salix matsudana “Tortuosa,” and the weeping willow, Salix babylonica, grow fast into shade trees with distinctive linear leaves that turn yellow in the fall. The Ginkgo shade tree, Ginkgo biloba, is one of the most famous of the shade and its brilliant yellow gold leaves that remain on the tree for a week or more when they fall to form a bright yellow circle underneath the barren limbs. The ginkgo leaves have been found fossilized in the Oriental archaeological excavations.
It’s no secret that I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with The Flaming Lips. One of the greatest live acts you can hope to see, and capable of making truly transcendent albums, their recent output has been perplexing to me. Whilst 2013’s The Terror shared much in common with their early psychedelic experimentation it lacked any sort of charm or melodic sweetness that had underpinned Wayne Coyne’s most commercially successful songs.
I haven been in the zone for months. Even if I might have 2 hours of uninterupted time at the end of a day (when I am most tired and frustrated) it is impossible to get focused when there is always a looming threat of interruption. It gotten so bad that I only get anything done late at night or over weekends, but then I am tired during weekdays and resentful that I had to throw away my freetime in order to move a project forward.
We like to think that our own younger but mature forest is also creating soil as we allow our trees to fall over and rot, creating, as our young nephew Patrick once cried over and over, “Dirt, dirt, dirt” while sifting the powdery, reddish brown remains of red oak branches through his fingers. Those powdery remains of the heartwood and sapwood appear to be a nursery for the downy rattlesnake plantains I’ve discovered inside and outside our exclosure. When we first put up the exclosure, I found a large colony of this orchid growing on a slope where several trees had rotted down to heartwood and sapwood.
